Computer Science is the 19th most popular major in the country with 53,722 degrees awarded in 2019-2020. In 2017-2018, computer science graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $66,561 and had an average of $23,565 in loans still to pay off.
At the master’s degree level specifically, there were 12,651 computer science graduates with average earnings and debt of $56,398 and $43,194 respectively.
For this year’s “Best Value CompSci Schools for a Master’s For Those Making $0-$30k” ranking, we looked at 211 colleges that offer a degree in computer science. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great computer science programs and cost less that schools of similar quality.
When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the computer science program at the school and the cost to attend the school once aid has been awarded. Check out our ranking methodology for more information.

Top 25 Best Value Master’s Degree Colleges for Computer Science (Income $0-$30k)
You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Stanford University. It ranked #1 on our 2022 Best Value CompSci Schools for a Master’s For Those Making $0-$30k list. Stanford University is a private not-for-profit institution located in Stanford, California. The school has a fairly large population, and it awarded 306 masters’s degrees in 2019-2020.
Stanford also took the #1 spot in our “Best Computer Science Master’s Degree Schools” ranking. Average graduate tuition and fees at Stanford are $55,011, but you may pay more or less depending on your major.

University of Pennsylvania is a large private not-for-profit school situated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It awarded 94 masters’s compsci degrees in 2019-2020.

Brown University ranked #7 on this year’s Best Value CompSci Schools for a Master’s For Those Making $0-$30k list. This medium-sized school is located in Providence, Rhode Island, and it awarded 107 masters’s compsci degrees in 2019-2020.

University of Chicago landed the #8 spot on the 2022 Best Value CompSci Schools for a Master’s For Those Making $0-$30k ranking. Located in Chicago, Illinois, this fairly large private not-for-profit school awarded 164 diplomas to qualified masters’s compsci students in 2019-2020.
UChicago not only placed well in this ranking. It is also #8 on our “Best Computer Science Master’s Degree Schools” list. Average graduate tuition and fees at University of Chicago are $61,548, but some majors have different tuition rates.
Cornell University did quite well in the 2022 Best Value CompSci Schools for a Master’s For Those Making $0-$30k ranking, coming in at #9. Ithaca, New York is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out masters’s compsci degrees to 279 students in 2019-2020.

Vanderbilt University ranked #11 on this year’s Best Value CompSci Schools for a Master’s For Those Making $0-$30k list. Vanderbilt is a fairly large private not-for-profit school situated in Nashville, Tennessee. It awarded 27 masters’s compsci degrees in 2019-2020.

Dartmouth College landed the #14 spot on the 2022 Best Value CompSci Schools for a Master’s For Those Making $0-$30k ranking. Dartmouth is a medium-sized school located in Hanover, New Hampshire that handed out 9 masters’s compsci degrees in 2019-2020.

Tufts University ranked #17 on this year’s Best Value CompSci Schools for a Master’s For Those Making $0-$30k list. Tufts is a fairly large private not-for-profit school situated in Medford, Massachusetts. It awarded 39 masters’s compsci degrees in 2019-2020.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill landed the #18 spot on the 2022 Best Value CompSci Schools for a Master’s For Those Making $0-$30k ranking. Chapel Hill, North Carolina is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out masters’s compsci degrees to 17 students in 2019-2020.
