General History is the 24th most popular major in the country with 31,630 degrees awarded in 2019-2020.

At the doctor’s degree level specifically, there were 803 general history graduates with average earnings and debt of $72,680 and $116,043 respectively.

For this year’s “Best Value General History Schools for a Doctorate” ranking, we looked at 117 colleges that offer a degree in general history. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality general history programs that also have a lower cost than schools of similar quality.
