Law is the 25th most popular major in the country with 34,750 degrees awarded in 2019-2020. In 2017-2018, law graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $58,876 and had an average of $112,084 in loans still to pay off.

Across the Southwest region, there were 2,837 law graduates with average earnings and debt of $56,663 and $102,239 respectively.

This year’s “Best Value Law Schools in the Southwest Region For Those Getting Aid” ranking looked at 11 colleges that offer degrees in a bachelor’s in law. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great law programs and cost less that schools of similar quality.

When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the law program at the school and the cost to attend the school once aid has been awarded. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend The University of Texas at Austin. It ranked #1 on our 2022 Best Value Law Schools in the Southwest Region For Those Getting Aid list. The University of Texas at Austin is a public institution located in Austin, Texas. The school has a large population, and it awarded 326 ’s degrees in 2019-2020.

UT Austin did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #1 on our “Best Law Schools in the Southwest Region” list. The yearly cost to attend The University of Texas at Austin is $18,023 for southwest region law students with aid.

Southern Methodist University ranked #11 on this year’s Best Value Law Schools in the Southwest Region For Those Getting Aid list. This fairly large school is located in Dallas, Texas, and it awarded 215 ’s law degrees in 2019-2020.

In addition to being on our southwest region law students with aid list, SMU has also earned the #2 rank in our “Best Law Schools in the Southwest Region” ranking. It costs about $36,222 for southwest region law students with aid per year to attend SMU.

The student loan default rate at the school is 4.3%, which is quite low when compared to the national default rate of 10.1%. With a freshman retention rate of 90%, the school does an excellent job of retaining its students.
