In 2019-2020, 31,080 people earned their degree in mathematics, making the major the 32nd most popular in the United States. In 2017-2018, mathematics graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $44,066 and had an average of $21,378 in loans still to pay off.

Across the Southwest region, there were 3,085 mathematics graduates with average earnings and debt of $45,218 and $20,069 respectively. At the bachelor’s degree level specifically, there were 2,160 mathematics graduates with average earnings and debt of $38,896 and $23,899 respectively.

This year’s “Best Value Math Schools for a Bachelor’s in the Southwest Region For Those Making $0-$30k” ranking analyzed 31 colleges that offered a degree in mathematics. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality mathematics programs that also have a lower cost than schools of similar quality.

When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the mathematics program at the school and the cost to attend the school once aid has been awarded. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

Rice University is a medium-sized school located in Houston, Texas that handed out 35 bachelors’s math degrees in 2019-2020.

Rice also took the #1 spot in our “Best Mathematics Bachelor’s Degree Schools in the Southwest Region” ranking. The estimated yearly cost for Rice is $3,437 for Southwest Region Bachelor’s Degree Math students whose families make $0-$30k.

With a freshman retention rate of 97%, the school does an excellent job of retaining its students.
