In 2019-2020, 36,854 people earned their degree in design and applied arts, making the major the 34th most popular in the United States. In 2017-2018, design and applied arts graduates who were awarded their degree in 2015-2017, earned an average of $29,542 and had an average of $27,114 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Middle Atlantic region, there were 7,328 design and applied arts graduates with average earnings and debt of $31,202 and $27,301 respectively. At the master’s degree level specifically, there were 691 design and applied arts graduates with average earnings and debt of $60,887 and $46,998 respectively.
For this year’s “Best Value Design Schools for a Master’s in the Middle Atlantic Region” ranking, we looked at 22 colleges that offer a degree in design and applied arts. Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent design and applied arts programs, but they also cost less that schools of similar quality.

Out of the 22 schools in the Best Value Design Schools for a Master’s in the Middle Atlantic Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Fashion Institute of Technology landed the #3 spot on the list. Fashion Institute of Technology is a medium-sized public school situated in New York, New York. It awarded 25 masters’s design degrees in 2019-2020.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at FIT SUNY, the school also landed the #10 spot in our “Best Design & Applied Arts Master’s Degree Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region” ranking. Average graduate tuition and fees at Fashion Institute of Technology are $24,209, but some majors have different tuition rates.

Out of the 22 schools in the Best Value Design Schools for a Master’s in the Middle Atlantic Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Kutztown University of Pennsylvania landed the #4 spot on the list. Located in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, this medium-sized public school handed out 3 degrees to qualified masters’s design students in 2019-2020.

University at Buffalo came in at #8 in this year’s edition of the Best Value Design Schools for a Master’s in the Middle Atlantic Region ranking. University at Buffalo is a large school located in Buffalo, New York that handed out 4 masters’s design degrees in 2019-2020.

Drexel University came in at #15 in this year’s edition of the Best Value Design Schools for a Master’s in the Middle Atlantic Region ranking. Drexel University is a large school located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that handed out 10 masters’s design degrees in 2019-2020.
Drexel also took the #13 spot in our “Best Design & Applied Arts Master’s Degree Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region” ranking. Although you might pay more or less depending on your area of study, average graduate tuition and fees at Drexel University are $37,074.
Syracuse University ranked #16 on this year’s Best Value Design Schools for a Master’s in the Middle Atlantic Region list. Syracuse is a large private not-for-profit school situated in Syracuse, New York. It awarded 14 masters’s design degrees in 2019-2020.
Syracuse did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #5 on our “Best Design & Applied Arts Master’s Degree Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region” list. Average graduate tuition and fees at Syracuse are $41,714, but you may pay more or less depending on your major.
With a ranking of #17, Carnegie Mellon University did quite well on the 2022 Best Value Design Schools for a Master’s in the Middle Atlantic Region list. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out masters’s design degrees to 28 students in 2019-2020.

Maryland Institute College of Art landed the #18 spot on the 2022 Best Value Design Schools for a Master’s in the Middle Atlantic Region ranking. MICA is a small private not-for-profit school situated in Baltimore, Maryland. It awarded 148 masters’s design degrees in 2019-2020.
MICA not only placed well in this ranking. It is also #2 on our “Best Design & Applied Arts Master’s Degree Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region” list. Average graduate tuition and fees at MICA are $49,190, but you may pay more or less depending on your major.
