Our analysis looked at 55 schools in Washington to determine which ones were the best for veterans and active service men and women. Instead of depending on subjective information, we focus on over 20 objective factors to determine this ranking. These factors include such things as number of GI Bill® recipients at the school, percentage of costs covered by the GI Bill®, and the school's overall quality.

Our 2021 rankings named Washington State University the best school in Washington for veterans working on their bachelor’s degree. Wazzu is a public institution located in Pullman, Washington. The school has a large population, and it awarded 7,635 bachelor’s degrees in 2019-2020.
Among the 31,159 students enrolled at Wazzu, 1,046 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 566 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $8,054. During this same period, 2 students received scholarships through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Wazzu does offer credit for military training for eligible students.
The student loan default rate at the school is 4.6%, which is quite low when compared to the national default rate of 10.1%. Wazzu excels when it comes to quality. It’s ranked in the top 10% of all schools on our Best Schools in Washington list.
The excellent bachelor’s degree programs at University of Washington - Seattle Campus helped the school earn the #2 place on this year’s ranking of the best schools for veterans in Washington. UW Seattle is a public institution located in Seattle, Washington. The school has a large population, and it awarded 14,925 bachelor’s degrees in 2019-2020.
Our most recent data shows that 1,278 of the 48,149 students enrolled at UW Seattle were GI Bill® students, of which 780 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $14,461. Students may be able to receive credit for their military training, depending on their background.
The low student loan default rate of 2.2% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. For comparison, the national default rate is 10.1%. In addition to its best for vets ranking, and one of the reasons why the school is on the list, UW Seattle is ranked #1 for overall quality in Washington.
A rank of #3 on our Best Colleges for Veterans in Washington list means Central Washington University is a great place for students working on their bachelor’s degree. Located in Ellensburg, Washington, the fairly large public school awarded 3,188 diplomas to qualified bachelor’s degree students in 2019-2020.
According to our most recent data, CWU supports 11,174 students, and 686 of those are GI Bill® students, of which 336 are Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. City University of Seattle ranked #7 on this year’s Best Colleges for Veterans in Washington list. Located in Seattle, Washington, the small private not-for-profit school handed out 564 bachelor’s degrees in 2019-2020.
Our most recent data shows that 253 of the 2,052 students enrolled at CityU were GI Bill® students, of which 235 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $10,136. On top of their other funding sources, 23 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program.
