With all of the options veterans have for higher education today, it can be tough to choose which direction to take. College Factual was founded, in part, to help students make the decision as to what would be the best school for them. Our Best Colleges for Veterans in Ohio ranking is part of that endeavor.
We analyzed 88 colleges and universities across Ohio to determine which were the best for veterans and active service members. To come up with this ranking, we look at more than 20 factors that are all objective measurements. These factors include percentage of costs covered by the GI Bill®, whether or not the school has a student's veteran organization, and the school's overall quality.

Ohio State University - Main Campus tops this year’s ranking as the best school for veterans in Ohio. Located in Columbus, Ohio, the large public school awarded 16,911 diplomas to qualified bachelor’s degree students in 2019-2020.
According to our most recent data, Ohio State supports 61,369 students, and 1,851 of those are GI Bill® students, of which 1,158 are Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $10,438. Eligible students may be able to receive credit for their military training.
The school has an impressive student loan default rate. It’s only 4.4%, which is much lower than the national rate of 10.1%. On top of its placing in our veterans ranking, Ohio State also did well on our Best Schools in Ohio list. It’s in the top 5% of all schools reviewed in this analysis.
Out of the 88 schools in Ohio that were part of this year’s ranking, Union Institute & University landed the #2 spot on the list. Union is a small private not-for-profit school situated in Cincinnati, Ohio. It awarded 435 bachelor’s degrees in 2019-2020.
Of the 809 students enrolled at Union, 35 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 28 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. Out of the 88 schools in Ohio that were part of this year’s ranking, University of Cincinnati - Main Campus landed the #3 spot on the list. University of Cincinnati - Main Campus is a large public school located in Cincinnati, Ohio that handed out 10,085 bachelor’s degrees in 2019-2020.
Our most recent data shows that 984 of the 40,826 students enrolled at UC were GI Bill® students, of which 559 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. Xavier University ranked #11 on this year’s Best Colleges for Veterans in Ohio list. Xavier is located in Cincinnati, Ohio and, has a medium-sized student population. In 2019-2020, this school awarded 2,010 bachelor’s degrees to qualified undergraduates.
Of the 7,061 students enrolled at Xavier, 247 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 196 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. Wright State University - Main Campus ranked #12 on this year’s Best Colleges for Veterans in Ohio list. This fairly large public school is located in Dayton, Ohio, and it awarded 3,285 bachelor’s degrees in 2019-2020.
Our most recent data shows that 866 of the 10,936 students enrolled at Wright State University - Main Campus were GI Bill® students, of which 532 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $7,522. On top of their other funding sources, 4 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program. Of the 2,817 students enrolled at ONU, 45 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 28 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. Capital University ranked #25 on this year’s Best Colleges for Veterans in Ohio list. This small private not-for-profit school is located in Columbus, Ohio, and it awarded 848 bachelor’s degrees in 2019-2020.
