General Agriculture is the 157th most popular major in the country with 3,370 degrees awarded in 2020-2021. In 2019-2020, general agriculture graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $36,894 and had an average of $20,543 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Southwest region, there were 884 general agriculture graduates with average earnings and debt of $41,893 and $20,455 respectively.
For this year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for Agriculture” ranking, we looked at 12 colleges that offer a degree in general agriculture. Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent general agriculture programs, but they also offer a lot of support to veterans and active service members.
Some of the factors we look at when determining these rankings are overall quality of the general agriculture program at the school, veteran affordability, and veteran population. See our ranking methodology to learn more.

Top 12 Best General Agriculture Colleges for Veterans in the Southwest Region
Out of the 12 schools in the Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for Agriculture that were part of this year’s ranking, Texas A&M University - College Station landed the #1 spot on the list. College Station, Texas is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out ’s agriculture degrees to 23 students in 2020-2021.
Texas A&M College Station did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] on our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” list.Of the 70,418 students enrolled at Texas A&M College Station, 5 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 4 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $4,925. To help with additional expenses, 0 students received scholarships through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Eligible students may be able to receive credit for their military training.
The low undergrad student loan default rate of [DEFAULT_RATE_STRING]% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. For comparison, the national default rate is 10.1%. Students who start out at the school are likely to stick around. The freshman retention rate is 94%.

Tarleton State University is a fairly large school located in Stephenville, Texas that handed out 106 ’s agriculture degrees in 2020-2021.
Tarleton also made our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” list, coming in at #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS].Among the 14,016 students enrolled at Tarleton, 755 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Sam Houston State University is located in Huntsville, Texas and, has a large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 42 ’s agriculture degrees to qualified students.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at SHSU, the school also landed the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] spot in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Our most recent data shows that 1,092 of the 21,912 students enrolled at SHSU were GI Bill® students, of which 496 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. Texas State is a large school located in San Marcos, Texas that handed out 38 ’s agriculture degrees in 2020-2021.

In addition to being on our southwest region vets studying agriculture list, Angelo State has also earned the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] rank in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.According to our most recent data, Angelo State supports 10,775 students, and 507 of those are GI Bill® students, of which 225 are Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $4,911. On top of their other funding sources, 3 students received scholarships through the Yellow Ribbon Program. New Mexico State University - Main Campus did quite well in the 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for Agriculture ranking, coming in at #8. NMSU Main Campus is a fairly large school located in Las Cruces, New Mexico that handed out 25 ’s agriculture degrees in 2020-2021.
NMSU Main Campus did well in our major quality rankings, too.
