When it comes to choosing a college, veterans have a lot of options - but not all of them are good. One of our goals at College Factual is to give you as much information as we can - such as our “Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for Journalism” ranking - to help you make that decision.
In 2020-2021, 13,552 people earned their degree in journalism, making the major the 69th most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, journalism graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $32,953 and had an average of $23,734 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Great Lakes region, there were 1,618 journalism graduates with average earnings and debt of $33,946 and $25,109 respectively.
For this year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for Journalism” ranking, we looked at 37 colleges that offer a degree in journalism. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great journalism programs and a strong support system for veterans and active service members.
Some of the factors we look at when determining these rankings are overall quality of the journalism program at the school, veteran affordability, and veteran population. Check out our ranking methodology for more information.

Loyola University Chicago came in at #24 in this year’s edition of the Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for Journalism ranking. Loyola Chicago is a fairly large school located in Chicago, Illinois that handed out 39 ’s journalism degrees in 2020-2021.
In addition to being on our great lakes region vets studying journalism list, Loyola Chicago has also earned the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] rank in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Our most recent data shows that 261 of the 16,893 students enrolled at Loyola Chicago were GI Bill® students, of which 165 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients.
