When pursuing a degree in today’s world, veterans have many different options to choose from. College Factual was founded, in part, to help students make the decision as to what would be the best school for them. Our “Most Veteran Friendly in Texas for Journalism” ranking is part of that endeavor.
In 2020-2021, 13,552 people earned their degree in journalism, making the major the 69th most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, journalism graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $32,953 and had an average of $23,734 in loans still to pay off.
Across Texas, there were 888 journalism graduates with average earnings and debt of $31,046 and $24,615 respectively.
This year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in Texas for Journalism” ranking looked at 12 colleges that offer degrees in a bachelor’s in journalism. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality journalism programs as well as strong veteran support.
Some of the factors we look at when determining these rankings are overall quality of the journalism program at the school, veteran affordability, and veteran population. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

Top 12 Best Journalism Colleges for Veterans in Texas
Out of the 12 schools in the Most Veteran Friendly in Texas for Journalism that were part of this year’s ranking, University of North Texas landed the #1 spot on the list. University of North Texas is located in Denton, Texas and, has a large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 299 ’s journalism degrees to qualified students.
UNT also took the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] spot in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Our most recent data shows that 2,038 of the 40,953 students enrolled at University of North Texas were GI Bill® students, of which 1,138 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Texas Christian University. It ranked #2 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in Texas for Journalism list. This fairly large school is located in Fort Worth, Texas, and it awarded 27 ’s journalism degrees in 2020-2021.
In addition to being on our texas vets studying journalism list, TCU has also earned the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] rank in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Of the 11,379 students enrolled at TCU, 520 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 405 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $23,096. In addition to receiving other benefits, 343 students received scholarships through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Students may be able to receive credit for their military training, depending on their background.

Dallas, Texas is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out ’s journalism degrees to 52 students in 2020-2021.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at SMU, the school also landed the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] spot in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Our most recent data shows that 327 of the 12,373 students enrolled at Southern Methodist University were GI Bill® students, of which 215 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients.
