Veterans have lots of options to chooose from today when trying to decide which college to attend. One of our goals at College Factual is to give you as much information as we can - such as our “Most Veteran Friendly for IS for an Associate” ranking - to help you make that decision.
In 2020-2021, 18,325 people earned their degree in information science, making the major the 58th most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, information science graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $59,394 and had an average of $28,852 in loans still to pay off.
At the associate degree level specifically, there were 986 information science graduates with average earnings and debt of $35,806 and $19,336 respectively.
This year’s “Most Veteran Friendly for IS for an Associate” ranking looked at 14 colleges that offer degrees in a bachelor’s in information science. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great information science programs and a strong support system for veterans and active service members.
To come up with these rankings, we looked at factors such as veteran satisfaction, veteran affordability, and overall quality of the information science program at the school. Check out our ranking methodology for more information.

BHCC also took the #1 spot in our “Best Information Science Associate Degree Schools” ranking.According to our most recent data, BHCC supports 9,924 students, and 355 of those are GI Bill® students, of which 256 are Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Dakota State University. It ranked #2 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly for IS for an Associate list. Dakota State is a small school located in Madison, South Dakota that handed out 8 associates’s IS degrees in 2020-2021.

Out of the 14 schools in the Most Veteran Friendly for IS for an Associate that were part of this year’s ranking, University of Massachusetts - Lowell landed the #3 spot on the list. UMass Lowell is located in Lowell, Massachusetts and, has a fairly large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 22 associates’s IS degrees to qualified students.
UMass Lowell also took the #5 spot in our “Best Information Science Associate Degree Schools” ranking.According to our most recent data, UMass Lowell supports 18,150 students, and 623 of those are GI Bill® students, of which 290 are Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $8,664. On top of their other funding sources, 29 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program. UMass Lowell does offer credit for military training for eligible students.
The low undergrad student loan default rate of [DEFAULT_RATE_STRING]% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. For comparison, the national default rate is 10.1%.
