With all of the options veterans have for higher education today, it can be tough to choose which direction to take. Our “Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for Engineering-Related Fields for a Bachelor’s” ranking is part of that endeavor.

Engineering-Related Fields is the 112th most popular major in the country with 6,736 degrees awarded in 2020-2021. In 2019-2020, engineering-related fields graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $77,404 and had an average of $26,200 in loans still to pay off.

Across the Southwest region, there were 400 engineering-related fields graduates with average earnings and debt of $73,454 and $26,414 respectively. At the bachelor’s degree level specifically, there were 83 engineering-related fields graduates with average earnings and debt of $40,112 and $26,227 respectively.

For this year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for Engineering-Related Fields for a Bachelor’s” ranking, we looked at 2 colleges that offer a degree in engineering-related fields. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality engineering-related fields programs as well as strong veteran support.

To come up with these rankings, we looked at factors such as veteran satisfaction, veteran affordability, and overall quality of the engineering-related fields program at the school. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Arizona State University - Tempe. It ranked #1 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for Engineering-Related Fields for a Bachelor’s list. Located in Tempe, Arizona, this large public school handed out 36 degrees to qualified bachelors’s engineering-related fields students in 2020-2021.

ASU - Tempe did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #1 on our “Best Engineering-Related Fields Bachelor’s Degree Schools in the Southwest Region” list.Our most recent data shows that 7,566 of the 74,795 students enrolled at ASU - Tempe were GI Bill® students, of which 3,828 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $6,068. To help with additional expenses, 672 students received scholarships through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Students may be able to receive credit for their military training, depending on their background.

With a freshman retention rate of 86%, the school does an excellent job of retaining its undergraduate students. The school has an impressive undergrad student loan default rate. It’s only [DEFAULT_RATE_STRING]%, which is much lower than the national rate of 10.1%.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend University of Arizona. It ranked #2 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for Engineering-Related Fields for a Bachelor’s list. University of Arizona is a large school located in Tucson, Arizona that handed out 7 bachelors’s engineering-related fields degrees in 2020-2021.

University of Arizona also made our “Best Engineering-Related Fields Bachelor’s Degree Schools in the Southwest Region” list, coming in at #2.According to our most recent data, University of Arizona supports 45,601 students, and 2,131 of those are GI Bill® students, of which 1,478 are Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $8,880. During this same period, 31 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program.
