General Engineering is the 79th most popular major in the country with 11,796 degrees awarded in 2020-2021. In 2019-2020, general engineering graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $68,873 and had an average of $20,557 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Great Lakes region, there were 1,712 general engineering graduates with average earnings and debt of $76,207 and $23,456 respectively.
For this year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for Engineering for a Doctorate” ranking, we looked at 4 colleges that offer a degree in general engineering. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality general engineering programs as well as strong veteran support.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. It ranked #1 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for Engineering for a Doctorate list. University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee is a large public school situated in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It awarded 29 doctorate’s engineering degrees in 2020-2021.
UWM not only placed well in this ranking. It is also #1 on our “Best General Engineering Doctor’s Degree Schools in the Great Lakes Region” list.Our most recent data shows that 983 of the 24,565 students enrolled at University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee were GI Bill® students, of which 494 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $6,519. To help with additional expenses, 3 students received funds through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Students may be able to receive credit for their military training, depending on their background.

You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend Wright State University - Main Campus. The school came in at #2 for the Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for Engineering for a Doctorate. Dayton, Ohio is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out doctorate’s engineering degrees to 12 students in 2020-2021.
Wright State University - Main Campus also took the #2 spot in our “Best General Engineering Doctor’s Degree Schools in the Great Lakes Region” ranking.Our most recent data shows that 731 of the 10,936 students enrolled at Wright State University - Main Campus were GI Bill® students, of which 419 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $7,623. In addition to receiving other benefits, 4 students received scholarships through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Students may be able to receive credit for their military training, depending on their background.

This fairly large school is located in Carbondale, Illinois, and it awarded 7 doctorate’s engineering degrees in 2020-2021.
In addition to being on our great lakes region doctor’s degree vets studying engineering list, SIUC has also earned the #3 rank in our “Best General Engineering Doctor’s Degree Schools in the Great Lakes Region” ranking.Of the 11,366 students enrolled at SIUC, 1 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 0 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $0. In addition to receiving other benefits, 0 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program. SIUC does offer credit for military training for eligible students.

Cleveland State University is located in Cleveland, Ohio and, has a fairly large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 8 doctorate’s engineering degrees to qualified students.
Cleveland State University also took the #4 spot in our “Best General Engineering Doctor’s Degree Schools in the Great Lakes Region” ranking.Our most recent data shows that 411 of the 15,247 students enrolled at Cleveland State University were GI Bill® students, of which 169 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients.
