In 2020-2021, 12,529 people earned their degree in writing studies, making the major the 81st most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, writing studies graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $32,208 and had an average of $24,626 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Southwest region, there were 1,056 writing studies graduates with average earnings and debt of $37,760 and $24,609 respectively.
For this year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for Writing for a Master’s” ranking, we looked at 16 colleges that offer a degree in writing studies. Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent writing studies programs, but they also offer a lot of support to veterans and active service members.

Located in Tempe, Arizona, this large public school handed out 6 diplomas to qualified masters’s writing students in 2020-2021.
ASU - Tempe also took the #6 spot in our “Best Writing Studies Master’s Degree Schools in the Southwest Region” ranking.Among the 74,795 students enrolled at Arizona State University - Tempe, 7,566 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 3,828 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $6,068.
