Our “Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for General Writing” ranking is one tool we have developed to help in this regard.
General Writing is the 500th most popular major in the country with 856 degrees awarded in 2020-2021.
Across the Great Lakes region, there were 232 general writing graduates with average earnings and debt of $0 and $0 respectively.
This year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for General Writing” ranking analyzed 12 colleges that offered a degree in general writing. Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent general writing programs, but they also offer a lot of support to veterans and active service members.
When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the general writing program at the school, veteran affordability, and veteran satisfaction. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

Top 12 Best General Writing Colleges for Veterans in the Great Lakes Region
You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Marquette University. It ranked #1 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Great Lakes Region for General Writing list. Located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this fairly large private not-for-profit school handed out 16 degrees to qualified ’s general writing students in 2020-2021.
Marquette did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] on our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” list.Our most recent data shows that 140 of the 11,550 students enrolled at Marquette University were GI Bill® students, of which 93 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $15,404. On top of their other funding sources, 30 students received funds through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Eligible students may be able to receive credit for their military training.
The school has an excellent freshman retention rate of 88%, which means students like the school well enough to return for a second year. The school has an impressive undergrad student loan default rate. It’s only [DEFAULT_RATE_STRING]%, which is much lower than the national rate of 10.1%.

Ypsilanti, Michigan is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out ’s general writing degrees to 7 students in 2020-2021.
In addition to being on our great lakes region vets studying general writing list, Eastern Michigan has also earned the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] rank in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Our most recent data shows that 486 of the 16,294 students enrolled at Eastern Michigan were GI Bill® students, of which 265 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $10,462. During this same period, 0 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program. Students may be able to receive credit for their military training, depending on their background.

Located in Allendale, Michigan, this large public school awarded 37 diplomas to qualified ’s general writing students in 2020-2021.
GVSU not only placed well in this ranking. Located in Evansville, Indiana, this small private not-for-profit school handed out 3 diplomas to qualified ’s general writing students in 2020-2021.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at UE, the school also landed the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] spot in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Among the 2,323 students enrolled at University of Evansville, 61 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 35 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $16,001. Oakland is located in Rochester Hills, Michigan and, has a fairly large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 4 ’s general writing degrees to qualified students.
In addition to being on our great lakes region vets studying general writing list, Oakland has also earned the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] rank in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Our most recent data shows that 323 of the 18,552 students enrolled at Oakland University were GI Bill® students, of which 197 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. In addition to being on our great lakes region vets studying general writing list, Calvin has also earned the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] rank in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Our most recent data shows that 31 of the 3,307 students enrolled at Calvin were GI Bill® students, of which 17 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $14,224. During this same period, 11 students received funds through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Calvin offers credit for military training for eligible students.
