With all of the options veterans have for higher education today, it can be tough to choose which direction to take. College Factual was founded, in part, to help students make the decision as to what would be the best school for them. Our “Most Veteran Friendly for African Studies” ranking is part of that endeavor.
In 2020-2021, 213 people earned their degree in African studies, making the major the 889th most popular in the United States.
For this year’s “Most Veteran Friendly for African Studies” ranking, we looked at 12 colleges that offer a degree in African studies. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great African studies programs and a strong support system for veterans and active service members.
To come up with these rankings, we looked at factors such as veteran satisfaction, veteran affordability, and overall quality of the African studies program at the school. Check out our ranking methodology for more information.

Top 12 Best African Studies Colleges for Veterans
Out of the 12 schools in the Most Veteran Friendly for African Studies that were part of this year’s ranking, Brown University landed the #1 spot on the list. Brown is a fairly large school located in Providence, Rhode Island that handed out 13 ’s African studies degrees in 2020-2021.
Brown also took the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] spot in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Of the 9,948 students enrolled at Brown University, 98 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 19 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $20,111. During this same period, 40 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program.

Located in Washington, District of Columbia, this large private not-for-profit school handed out 2 diplomas to qualified ’s African studies students in 2020-2021.
GWU did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] on our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” list.Of the 27,017 students enrolled at GWU, 1 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data.
