In 2020-2021, 35,945 people earned their degree in health sciences and services, making the major the 34th most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, health sciences and services graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $35,887 and had an average of $24,736 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Southwest region, there were 4,460 health sciences and services graduates with average earnings and debt of $30,351 and $23,540 respectively.
For this year’s “Most Well Attended Health Science Major in the Southwest Region” ranking, we looked at 67 colleges that offer a degree in health sciences and services. To top this list, a school must have a successful health sciences and services program that graduates more students in the field than other colleges that offer the same major.

The undergrad student loan default rate at the school is 2.2%, which is quite low when compared to the national default rate of 10.1%. Students who start out at the school are likely to stick around. The freshman retention rate is 94%.

You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend University of Houston. The school came in at #3 for the Most Well Attended Health Science Major in the Southwest Region. UH is a large public school situated in Houston, Texas. It awarded 222 ’s health science degrees in 2020-2021.
The school has an impressive undergrad student loan default rate. It’s only 4.4%, which is much lower than the national rate of 10.1%. Students who start out at the school are likely to stick around. The freshman retention rate is 86%.
Out of the 67 schools in the Most Well Attended Health Science Major in the Southwest Region that were part of this year’s ranking, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley landed the #4 spot on the list. Edinburg, Texas is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out ’s health science degrees to 194 students in 2020-2021.
The low undergrad student loan default rate of 0.7% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. For comparison, the national default rate is 10.1%.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend The University of Texas at Dallas. It ranked #5 on our 2023 Most Well Attended Health Science Major in the Southwest Region list. Located in Richardson, Texas, this large public school handed out 180 degrees to qualified ’s health science students in 2020-2021.
With a freshman retention rate of 90%, the school does an excellent job of retaining its undergraduate students. The low undergrad student loan default rate of 3.8% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools.
