Our mission at College Factual is to arm you with as much information as we can to help you make that decision. Our “Most Veteran Friendly in the Plains States Region for Medicine” ranking is one tool we have developed to help in this regard.
In 2020-2021, 28,629 people earned their degree in medicine, making the major the 40th most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, medicine graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $57,621 and had an average of $16,640 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Plains States region, there were 2,453 medicine graduates with average earnings and debt of $57,509 and $0 respectively.
This year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Plains States Region for Medicine” ranking looked at 11 colleges that offer degrees in a bachelor’s in medicine. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality medicine programs as well as strong veteran support.
When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the medicine program at the school, veteran affordability, and veteran satisfaction. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

Top 11 Best Medicine Colleges for Veterans in the Plains States Region
You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend University of Iowa. The school came in at #1 for the Most Veteran Friendly in the Plains States Region for Medicine. Located in Iowa City, Iowa, this large public school handed out 142 degrees to qualified ’s medicine students in 2020-2021.
Iowa did well in our major quality rankings, too. Creighton University landed the #6 spot on the 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Plains States Region for Medicine ranking. Located in Omaha, Nebraska, this medium-sized private not-for-profit school awarded 164 diplomas to qualified ’s medicine students in 2020-2021.
Creighton also took the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] spot in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Among the 8,770 students enrolled at Creighton University, 278 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. University of Nebraska Medical Center ranked #7 on this year’s Most Veteran Friendly in the Plains States Region for Medicine list. UNMC is a small school located in Omaha, Nebraska that handed out 123 ’s medicine degrees in 2020-2021.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at UNMC, the school also landed the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] spot in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Our most recent data shows that 72 of the 3,699 students enrolled at UNMC were GI Bill® students, of which 35 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $11,242. On top of their other funding sources, 6 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program.
