It’s not easy to decide which college to attend when there so many options available for veterans. Our mission at College Factual is to arm you with as much information as we can to help you make that decision. Our “Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Library Science for a Master’s” ranking is one tool we have developed to help in this regard.
In 2020-2021, 5,950 people earned their degree in library and information science, making the major the 121st most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, library and information science graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $43,949 and had an average of $27,472 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Southeast region, there were 1,336 library and information science graduates with average earnings and debt of $41,694 and $22,165 respectively.
This year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Library Science for a Master’s” ranking analyzed 13 colleges that offered a degree in library and information science. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality library and information science programs as well as strong veteran support.
When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the library and information science program at the school, veteran affordability, and veteran satisfaction. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a public institution located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The school has a large population, and it awarded 54 masters’s degrees in 2020-2021.
In addition to being on our southeast region master’s degree vets studying library science list, UNC Chapel Hill has also earned the #1 rank in our “Best Library & Information Science Master’s Degree Schools in the Southeast Region” ranking.According to our most recent data, UNC Chapel Hill supports 30,092 students, and 1 of those are GI Bill® students, of which 0 are Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. Located in Columbia, South Carolina, this large public school handed out 119 degrees to qualified masters’s library science students in 2020-2021.
UofSC also took the #2 spot in our “Best Library & Information Science Master’s Degree Schools in the Southeast Region” ranking.According to our most recent data, UofSC supports 35,470 students, and 1,609 of those are GI Bill® students, of which 651 are Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $8,453. To help with additional expenses, 33 students received funds through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Students may be able to receive credit for their military training, depending on their background.

Out of the 13 schools in the Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Library Science for a Master’s that were part of this year’s ranking, The University of Tennessee - Knoxville landed the #4 spot on the list. The University of Tennessee - Knoxville is a large public school situated in Knoxville, Tennessee. It awarded 106 masters’s library science degrees in 2020-2021.
UT Knoxville not only placed well in this ranking. It is also #4 on our “Best Library & Information Science Master’s Degree Schools in the Southeast Region” list.According to our most recent data, The University of Tennessee - Knoxville supports 30,559 students, and 1,122 of those are GI Bill® students, of which 739 are Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $10,650. To help with additional expenses, 8 students received scholarships through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Eligible students may be able to receive credit for their military training.

You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend University of Kentucky. The school came in at #5 for the Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Library Science for a Master’s. UK is a large public school situated in Lexington, Kentucky. It awarded 99 masters’s library science degrees in 2020-2021.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at UK, the school also landed the #9 spot in our “Best Library & Information Science Master’s Degree Schools in the Southeast Region” ranking.Of the 29,986 students enrolled at University of Kentucky, 1 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. UA also took the #7 spot in our “Best Library & Information Science Master’s Degree Schools in the Southeast Region” ranking.Among the 37,840 students enrolled at The University of Alabama, 2,081 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 1,128 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $7,975. In addition to receiving other benefits, 357 students received scholarships through the Yellow Ribbon Program. The University of Alabama offers credit for military training for eligible students.

University of South Florida - Main Campus did quite well in the 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Library Science for a Master’s ranking, coming in at #8. Located in Tampa, Florida, this large public school handed out 98 degrees to qualified masters’s library science students in 2020-2021.
USF Tampa did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #8 on our “Best Library & Information Science Master’s Degree Schools in the Southeast Region” list.Our most recent data shows that 2,211 of the 50,626 students enrolled at University of South Florida - Main Campus were GI Bill® students, of which 1,241 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. UNC Greensboro is a fairly large public school situated in Greensboro, North Carolina. It awarded 128 masters’s library science degrees in 2020-2021.

North Carolina Central University landed the #11 spot on the 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Library Science for a Master’s ranking. Located in Durham, North Carolina, this medium-sized public school handed out 89 diplomas to qualified masters’s library science students in 2020-2021.
North Carolina Central University not only placed well in this ranking. It is also #12 on our “Best Library & Information Science Master’s Degree Schools in the Southeast Region” list.Our most recent data shows that 433 of the 8,078 students enrolled at North Carolina Central University were GI Bill® students, of which 124 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. Western Kentucky University is a fairly large school located in Bowling Green, Kentucky that handed out 28 masters’s library science degrees in 2020-2021.
