When pursuing a degree in today’s world, veterans have many different options to choose from. Our “Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for Library Science for a Master’s” ranking is part of that endeavor.
In 2020-2021, 5,950 people earned their degree in library and information science, making the major the 121st most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, library and information science graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $43,949 and had an average of $27,472 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Southwest region, there were 1,004 library and information science graduates with average earnings and debt of $45,689 and $0 respectively.
For this year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for Library Science for a Master’s” ranking, we looked at 7 colleges that offer a degree in library and information science. Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent library and information science programs, but they also offer a lot of support to veterans and active service members.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend University of Oklahoma Norman Campus. It ranked #1 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for Library Science for a Master’s list. University of Oklahoma is located in Norman, Oklahoma and, has a large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 79 masters’s library science degrees to qualified students.
University of Oklahoma also took the #4 spot in our “Best Library & Information Science Master’s Degree Schools in the Southwest Region” ranking.Among the 27,772 students enrolled at University of Oklahoma, 12 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 10 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $3,720. In addition to receiving other benefits, 0 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program. University of Oklahoma does offer credit for military training for eligible students.

University of Arizona is a large public school situated in Tucson, Arizona. It awarded 73 masters’s library science degrees in 2020-2021.
University of Arizona did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #3 on our “Best Library & Information Science Master’s Degree Schools in the Southwest Region” list.According to our most recent data, University of Arizona supports 45,601 students, and 2,131 of those are GI Bill® students, of which 1,478 are Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $8,880. To help with additional expenses, 31 students received funds through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Students may be able to receive credit for their military training, depending on their background.
The school has an excellent freshman retention rate of 85%, which means students like the school well enough to return for a second year.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Texas Woman’s University. It ranked #3 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for Library Science for a Master’s list. Located in Denton, Texas, this fairly large public school handed out 238 degrees to qualified masters’s library science students in 2020-2021.
As a testament to the quality of education offered at TWU, the school also landed the #1 spot in our “Best Library & Information Science Master’s Degree Schools in the Southwest Region” ranking.Among the 16,433 students enrolled at Texas Woman’s University, 495 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 251 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $5,466. On top of their other funding sources, 0 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program. Eligible students may be able to receive credit for their military training.

You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend Sam Houston State University. The school came in at #5 for the Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for Library Science for a Master’s. SHSU is a large school located in Huntsville, Texas that handed out 66 masters’s library science degrees in 2020-2021.
SHSU also took the #5 spot in our “Best Library & Information Science Master’s Degree Schools in the Southwest Region” ranking.According to our most recent data, Sam Houston State University supports 21,912 students, and 1,092 of those are GI Bill® students, of which 496 are Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $6,097. During this same period, 0 students received funds through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Sam Houston State University does offer credit for military training for eligible students.

Texas A&M University - Commerce came in at #6 in this year’s edition of the Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for Library Science for a Master’s ranking. This fairly large school is located in Commerce, Texas, and it awarded 54 masters’s library science degrees in 2020-2021.
Texas A&M Commerce also took the #6 spot in our “Best Library & Information Science Master’s Degree Schools in the Southwest Region” ranking.Of the 12,249 students enrolled at Texas A&M Commerce, 594 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 337 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $5,401. Northeastern State University came in at #7 in this year’s edition of the Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for Library Science for a Master’s ranking. NSU is located in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and, has a medium-sized student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 13 masters’s library science degrees to qualified students.
NSU also made our “Best Library & Information Science Master’s Degree Schools in the Southwest Region” list, coming in at #7.According to our most recent data, Northeastern State University supports 7,349 students, and 304 of those are GI Bill® students, of which 118 are Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $3,801. To help with additional expenses, 1 students received scholarships through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Students may be able to receive credit for their military training, depending on their background.
