It’s not easy to decide which college to attend when there so many options available for veterans. One of our goals at College Factual is to give you as much information as we can - such as our “Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Library Science” ranking - to help you make that decision.
Library & Information Science is the 121st most popular major in the country with 5,950 degrees awarded in 2020-2021. In 2019-2020, library and information science graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $43,949 and had an average of $27,472 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Southeast region, there were 1,336 library and information science graduates with average earnings and debt of $41,694 and $22,165 respectively.
For this year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Library Science” ranking, we looked at 13 colleges that offer a degree in library and information science. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great library and information science programs and a strong support system for veterans and active service members.
To come up with these rankings, we looked at factors such as veteran satisfaction, veteran affordability, and overall quality of the library and information science program at the school. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It ranked #1 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Library Science list. This large school is located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and it awarded 54 ’s library science degrees in 2020-2021.
In addition to being on our southeast region vets studying library science list, UNC Chapel Hill has also earned the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] rank in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.According to our most recent data, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill supports 30,092 students, and 1 of those are GI Bill® students, of which 0 are Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. UofSC is a public institution located in Columbia, South Carolina. The school has a large population, and it awarded 121 ’s degrees in 2020-2021.
In addition to being on our southeast region vets studying library science list, UofSC has also earned the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] rank in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Among the 35,470 students enrolled at University of South Carolina - Columbia, 1,609 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend The University of Tennessee - Knoxville. The school came in at #4 for the Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Library Science. This large school is located in Knoxville, Tennessee, and it awarded 106 ’s library science degrees in 2020-2021.
In addition to being on our southeast region vets studying library science list, UT Knoxville has also earned the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] rank in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Our most recent data shows that 1,122 of the 30,559 students enrolled at The University of Tennessee - Knoxville were GI Bill® students, of which 739 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $10,650. To help with additional expenses, 8 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program. The University of Tennessee - Knoxville offers credit for military training for eligible students.

Out of the 13 schools in the Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Library Science that were part of this year’s ranking, University of Kentucky landed the #5 spot on the list. Located in Lexington, Kentucky, this large public school awarded 99 diplomas to qualified ’s library science students in 2020-2021.

The University of Alabama did quite well in the 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Library Science ranking, coming in at #7. Tuscaloosa, Alabama is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out ’s library science degrees to 80 students in 2020-2021.
UA did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] on our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” list.Of the 37,840 students enrolled at UA, 2,081 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 1,128 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $7,975. In addition to receiving other benefits, 357 students received funds through the Yellow Ribbon Program. UA offers credit for military training for eligible students.
Students who start out at the school are likely to stick around. The freshman retention rate is 87%. University of South Florida - Main Campus did quite well in the 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Library Science ranking, coming in at #8. USF Tampa is a public institution located in Tampa, Florida. The school has a large population, and it awarded 98 ’s degrees in 2020-2021.
