In 2020-2021, 6,538 people earned their degree in library science, making the major the 35th most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, library science graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $43,990 and had an average of $24,604 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Southeast region, there were 1,390 library science graduates with average earnings and debt of $41,990 and $22,165 respectively.
For this year’s “Best Value Library Science Schools in the Southeast Region” ranking, we looked at 11 colleges that offer a degree in library science. This ranking identifies schools with high-quality library science programs that also have a lower cost than schools of similar quality.
Some of the factors we look at when determining these rankings are overall quality of the library science program at the school and the cost of the school after aid is awarded among other things. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

Top 11 Best Value Colleges for Library Science in the Southeast Region
You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend East Carolina University. The school came in at #1 for the Best Value Library Science Schools in the Southeast Region. Located in Greenville, North Carolina, this large public school awarded 79 degrees to qualified ’s library science students in 2020-2021.
ECU also took the #5 spot in our “Best Library Science Schools in the Southeast Region” ranking. The yearly cost to attend ECU is $16,550 for Southeast Region Library Science students.

You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around if you attend University of South Carolina - Columbia. The school came in at #2 for the Best Value Library Science Schools in the Southeast Region. Located in Columbia, South Carolina, this large public school handed out 121 diplomas to qualified ’s library science students in 2020-2021.
UofSC also made our “Best Library Science Schools in the Southeast Region” list, coming in at #2. The estimated yearly cost for UofSC is $20,559 for Southeast Region Library Science students.
Students who start out at the school are likely to stick around. The freshman retention rate is 90%. The school has an impressive undergrad student loan default rate. It’s only 3.1%, which is much lower than the national rate of 10.1%.

Out of the 11 schools in the Best Value Library Science Schools in the Southeast Region that were part of this year’s ranking, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill landed the #3 spot on the list. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and, has a large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 54 ’s library science degrees to qualified students.
UNC Chapel Hill also took the #1 spot in our “Best Library Science Schools in the Southeast Region” ranking. The estimated yearly cost for University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is $12,469 for southeast region library science students.
Students who start out at the school are likely to stick around. The freshman retention rate is 95%. The undergrad student loan default rate at the school is 1.4%, which is quite low when compared to the national default rate of 10.1%.

Out of the 11 schools in the Best Value Library Science Schools in the Southeast Region that were part of this year’s ranking, University of South Florida - Main Campus landed the #4 spot on the list. University of South Florida - Main Campus is a public institution located in Tampa, Florida. The school has a large population, and it awarded 98 ’s degrees in 2020-2021.
USF Tampa did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #7 on our “Best Library Science Schools in the Southeast Region” list. It costs about $8,346 for southeast region library science students per year to attend University of South Florida - Main Campus.

Valdosta State University is a public institution located in Valdosta, Georgia. The school has a fairly large population, and it awarded 120 ’s degrees in 2020-2021.

University of North Carolina at Greensboro did quite well in the 2023 Best Value Library Science Schools in the Southeast Region ranking, coming in at #6.
