It’s not easy to decide which college to attend when there so many options available for veterans. In 2019-2020, outdoor education graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $27,786 and had an average of $18,614 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Rocky Mountains region, there were 36 outdoor education graduates with average earnings and debt of $23,048 and $14,000 respectively. At the bachelor’s degree level specifically, there were 32 outdoor education graduates with average earnings and debt of $40,089 and $26,296 respectively.
Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent outdoor education programs, but they also offer a lot of support to veterans and active service members.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Fort Lewis College. It ranked #1 on our 2023 Most Veteran Friendly in the Rocky Mountains Region for Outdoor Ed for a Bachelor’s list. FLC is a small school located in Durango, Colorado that handed out 10 bachelors’s outdoor ed degrees in 2020-2021.
FLC also made our “Best Outdoor Education Bachelor’s Degree Schools in the Rocky Mountains Region” list, coming in at #1.Our most recent data shows that 101 of the 3,469 students enrolled at Fort Lewis College were GI Bill® students, of which 53 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $4,268. To help with additional expenses, 6 students received funds through the Yellow Ribbon Program.
