Homeland Security is the 117th most popular major in the country with 7,140 degrees awarded in 2020-2021. In 2019-2020, homeland security graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $52,213 and had an average of $28,747 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Southeast region, there were 2,413 homeland security graduates with average earnings and debt of $52,137 and $29,500 respectively. At the bachelor’s degree level specifically, there were 1,134 homeland security graduates with average earnings and debt of $37,400 and $27,180 respectively.
This year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Homeland Security for a Bachelor’s” ranking analyzed 19 colleges that offered a degree in homeland security. Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent homeland security programs, but they also offer a lot of support to veterans and active service members.

Out of the 19 schools in the Most Veteran Friendly in the Southeast Region for Homeland Security for a Bachelor’s that were part of this year’s ranking, George Mason University landed the #1 spot on the list. George Mason University is a public institution located in Fairfax, Virginia. The school has a large population, and it awarded 84 bachelors’s degrees in 2020-2021.
GMU did well in our major quality rankings, too. It placed #1 on our “Best Homeland Security Bachelor’s Degree Schools in the Southeast Region” list.Of the 38,541 students enrolled at GMU, 2,334 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data.
