In 2020-2021, 11,039 people earned their degree in criminology, making the major the 80th most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, criminology graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $33,568 and had an average of $24,453 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Southwest region, there were 842 criminology graduates with average earnings and debt of $31,435 and $22,013 respectively.
For this year’s “Most Well Attended Criminology Major in the Southwest Region” ranking, we looked at 22 colleges that offer a degree in criminology. To top this list, a school must have a successful criminology program that graduates more students in the field than other colleges that offer the same major.

Out of the 22 schools in the Most Well Attended Criminology Major in the Southwest Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Northern Arizona University landed the #1 spot on the list. NAU is a large school located in Flagstaff, Arizona that handed out 284 ’s criminology degrees in 2020-2021.

Texas A&M San Antonio is located in San Antonio, Texas and, has a medium-sized student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 118 ’s criminology degrees to qualified students.
You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Central New Mexico Community College. It ranked #3 on our 2023 Most Well Attended Criminology Major in the Southwest Region list. This fairly large school is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and it awarded 81 ’s criminology degrees in 2020-2021.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend The University of Texas at Dallas. It ranked #4 on our 2023 Most Well Attended Criminology Major in the Southwest Region list. Richardson, Texas is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out ’s criminology degrees to 74 students in 2020-2021.
With a freshman retention rate of 90%, the school does an excellent job of retaining its undergraduate students. The low undergrad student loan default rate of 3.8% is a good sign that students have an easier time paying off their loans than they might at other schools. For comparison, the national default rate is 10.1%.

St. Mary’s University came in at #7 in this year’s edition of the Most Well Attended Criminology Major in the Southwest Region ranking. This small school is located in San Antonio, Texas, and it awarded 31 ’s criminology degrees in 2020-2021.
