With 149,215 degrees handed out in 2020-2021, visual and performing arts is the 10th most popular major in the United States. In 2019-2020, visual and performing arts graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $26,700 and had an average of $25,051 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Plains States region, there were 7,381 visual and performing arts graduates with average earnings and debt of $27,498 and $25,515 respectively.
For this year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Plains States Region for Visual & Performing Arts for a Master’s” ranking, we looked at 23 colleges that offer a degree in visual and performing arts. The schools that top this list are recognized because they have great visual and performing arts programs and a strong support system for veterans and active service members.

University of Nebraska at Kearney is a public institution located in Kearney, Nebraska. The school has a medium-sized population, and it awarded 33 masters’s degrees in 2020-2021.

MCAD also made our “Best Visual & Performing Arts Master’s Degree Schools in the Plains States Region” list, coming in at #18.Our most recent data shows that 19 of the 760 students enrolled at Minneapolis College of Art and Design were GI Bill® students, of which 11 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $12,588. On top of their other funding sources, 4 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program.
The school has an impressive undergrad student loan default rate. It’s only [DEFAULT_RATE_STRING]%, which is much lower than the national rate of 10.1%. The undergraduate student-to-faculty ratio of 9 to 1 is a sign that students will have more opportunities to engage with their professors one-on-one.
