In 2020-2021, 2,724 people earned their degree in American Sign Language, making the major the 199th most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, American Sign Language graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $32,250 and had an average of $24,208 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Middle Atlantic region, there were 357 American Sign Language graduates with average earnings and debt of $38,437 and $26,875 respectively. At the bachelor’s degree level specifically, there were 108 American Sign Language graduates with average earnings and debt of $40,457 and $25,851 respectively.

Out of the 4 schools in the Most Veteran Friendly in the Middle Atlantic Region for ASL for a Bachelor’s that were part of this year’s ranking, Rochester Institute of Technology landed the #1 spot on the list. Located in Rochester, New York, this fairly large private not-for-profit school awarded 32 degrees to qualified bachelors’s ASL students in 2020-2021.
RIT also made our “Best American Sign Language Bachelor’s Degree Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region” list, coming in at #2.Among the 16,158 students enrolled at RIT, 1 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Bloomsburg is a public institution located in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. The school has a medium-sized population, and it awarded 31 bachelors’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Bloomsburg also took the #3 spot in our “Best American Sign Language Bachelor’s Degree Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region” ranking.Among the 8,427 students enrolled at Bloomsburg, 244 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $9,800. To help with additional expenses, 4 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program. Gallaudet University is a private not-for-profit institution located in Washington, District of Columbia. The school has a small population, and it awarded 28 bachelors’s degrees in 2020-2021.
In addition to being on our middle atlantic region bachelor’s degree vets studying asl list, Gallaudet has also earned the #1 rank in our “Best American Sign Language Bachelor’s Degree Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region” ranking.Of the 1,451 students enrolled at Gallaudet University, 22 were GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 9 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average tuition and fees award for the Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients was $8,773. On top of their other funding sources, 0 students received funds through the Yellow Ribbon Program.
