With all of the options veterans have for higher education today, it can be tough to choose which direction to take. College Factual was founded, in part, to help students make the decision as to what would be the best school for them. Our “Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for ASL” ranking is part of that endeavor.
In 2020-2021, 2,724 people earned their degree in American Sign Language, making the major the 199th most popular in the United States. In 2019-2020, American Sign Language graduates who were awarded their degree in 2017-2019, earned an average of $32,250 and had an average of $24,208 in loans still to pay off.
Across the Southwest region, there were 456 American Sign Language graduates with average earnings and debt of $37,816 and $13,895 respectively.
For this year’s “Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for ASL” ranking, we looked at 3 colleges that offer a degree in American Sign Language. Not only do the schools that top this list have excellent American Sign Language programs, but they also offer a lot of support to veterans and active service members.
When determining these rankings, we looked at things such as overall quality of the American Sign Language program at the school, veteran affordability, and veteran satisfaction. For more information, check out our ranking methodology.

Top 3 Best American Sign Language Colleges for Veterans in the Southwest Region
Out of the 3 schools in the Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for ASL that were part of this year’s ranking, University of Houston landed the #1 spot on the list. This large school is located in Houston, Texas, and it awarded 12 ’s ASL degrees in 2020-2021.
UH not only placed well in this ranking. It is also #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] on our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” list.Among the 47,090 students enrolled at UH, 1,382 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 730 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $8,264. On top of their other funding sources, 0 students qualified for the Yellow Ribbon Program. Eligible students may be able to receive credit for their military training.

University of New Mexico - Main Campus is a large school located in Albuquerque, New Mexico that handed out 14 ’s ASL degrees in 2020-2021.
UNM not only placed well in this ranking. Out of the 3 schools in the Most Veteran Friendly in the Southwest Region for ASL that were part of this year’s ranking, Lamar University landed the #3 spot on the list. Beaumont, Texas is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out ’s ASL degrees to 15 students in 2020-2021.
In addition to being on our southwest region vets studying asl list, Lamar University has also earned the #[COLLEGE_QUALITY_RANK_ALL_LEVELS] rank in our “[COLLEGE_QUALITY_NAME_ALL_LEVELS]” ranking.Among the 16,637 students enrolled at Lamar University, 692 are GI Bill® students, according to our most recent data. Out of that number, 353 were Post-9/11 GI Bill® recipients. The average Post-9/11 GI Bill® award for tuition and fees at the school was $4,108. In addition to receiving other benefits, 0 students received scholarships through the Yellow Ribbon Program. Students may be able to receive credit for their military training, depending on their background.
